
Oyo State Police Command has emerged winner of the 4th Bi-ennial Zone XI Police Games.
The command emerged tops having won 76 Gold, 42 silver and 9 bronze medals to beat the two other states within the zone, Ondo and Osun at the end of the weeklong tourney held at the sports ground of Oyo State Police headquarters, Eleyele Ibadan.
Ondo state came a distant second with 49 gold, 38 silver and 15 bronze medals while Osun emerged second runners-up, having won 39 gold, 18 silver and 5 bronze medals.
Speaking at the ceremony, Oyo State Commissioner of Police, Moses Onireti said the sports meet was organised to foster cordial relationship among the Police officers and to also select good athletes that will represent the zone at the
10th Bi-ennial Police Games scheduled for Kaduna next month.
The athletes at the zonal festival participated in events such as Athletics,
Chess, Handball, Table-tennis, Tennis, Scrabble, Football, Judo,
Karate, Kickboxing, Wrestling, Taekwondo, Weightlifting, Dart,
Badminton, Boxing and Squash.
The most prestigious gold medal of the competition, the football gold was won at the closing ceremony by the Oyo state Command, which defeated its Osun state counterpart, 2-0, while Oladimeji Toyin of Ondo Command and Olaniyi Bukola of Oyo emerged as fastest male and female runners, having picked gold medals in the 100meters event.
Among the dignitaries that graced the closing ceremony was an Ibadan-based business magnate and traditional ruler, Aro Olatunde Oginni who handed the overall winner’s trophy to the Oyo state Police Command.
